Overview

The Level 2 Hardware, Network and Infrastructure Foundation apprenticeship is for people who want to get into IT support and infrastructure, the practical stuff that keeps businesses running. It’s not about sitting in a classroom talking theory. It’s about learning how to set up devices, fix faults, support users, and keep networks working smoothly and securely.

If you’re the person who likes figuring out why something isn’t working (and actually enjoys fixing it), this programme turns that instinct into real, employable skills.

It’s a great starting point for school leavers, adults looking to upskill, or career changers who want a clear route into a stable digital career. Typically completed in 8–12 months, it blends workplace experience with structured training, so by the end you’re not just “interested in IT” you can genuinely support an organisation’s tech day to day.

What You'll Learn

You’ll build the core skills needed for first-line IT support, hardware care, and basic network/infrastructure work.

  • Hardware setup and maintenance: prepping laptops/desktops, replacing components, and keeping devices running reliably.
  • Fault-finding and troubleshooting: diagnosing common problems using structured checks and tools (then fixing or escalating).
  • Networks and connectivity basics: supporting Wi-Fi and wired connections, basic cabling, and getting devices online securely.
  • Software and firmware installs: installing/configuring applications, updates, and device firmware to user and business requirements.
  • Cyber security essentials: spotting phishing: following security policies, and supporting safe working practices.
  • Ticketing, documentation and handovers: logging issues clearly, updating records, and keeping IT teams organised.
  • Professional support and communication: helping people calmly, explaining steps clearly, and working as part of a team.

Assessment & EPA

Assessment is designed to prove the apprentice can do the job in the real world, not just talk about it.

Throughout the programme, apprentices build evidence of their competence through normal workplace tasks and structured off-the-job training. When the apprentice is consistently performing at the right level, the employer and training provider confirm readiness at Gateway.

The final assessment typically includes:

  • A knowledge check/test covering core concepts like infrastructure basics, security, and safe working.
  • A practical element where the apprentice demonstrates hands-on competence, for example diagnosing a fault, setting up equipment, or resolving a connectivity issue under observation.

The result is a clear sign that the apprentice is reliable, safe, and ready to contribute as a “plug-in-and-go” IT support team member.

Career Progression

Completing this Level 2 apprenticeship is a launchpad into the wider IT and digital sector. Many learners move into roles like Junior IT Support Technician, IT Service Desk Analyst, or Digital Support Assistant, building experience while increasing responsibility.

From there, progression typically goes into a Level 3 apprenticeship where you specialise, for example:

  • Information Communications Technician (support/network routes)
  • IT Solutions Technician / Digital Support Technician
  • Cyber Security Technician
  • Data Technician (if you discover you enjoy the analytical or build side)

If you enjoy infrastructure, you can grow towards Network Engineer or Infrastructure Technician roles over time. If security interests you, you can progress into cyber pathways. Either way, this is the solid foundation that gets you into IT properly, with skills that stay valuable as technology evolves.
