Overview

The Level 3 Data Technician apprenticeship (ST0795) trains people to source, clean, organise and present data so teams can make better decisions. It’s ideal for school leavers, career changers, and existing staff who want a practical route into data roles without university.

Apprentices learn how to work with real business data from systems like CRMs, finance tools and operational databases. The focus is on doing the job for real: improving data quality, speeding up reporting, and building dashboards that stakeholders actually use.

If you’re the person who looks at messy data and immediately wants to sort it, simplify it, and make it useful, this programme turns that instinct into a valued digital skillset. You finish with recognised occupational competence and clear progression into analyst, reporting, and data platform roles.

What You'll Learn

During the programme, apprentices build practical skills that are used every day in real data roles.

  • Data sourcing and extraction from common business systems, including basic SQL and Power Query skills
  • Data cleansing and quality checks to fix duplicates, missing values, and inconsistent formats
  • Data validation techniques that protect accuracy and create trusted reporting
  • Data analysis fundamentals to spot patterns, trends, and performance changes
  • Data visualisation using tools such as Power BI to create clear dashboards and reports
  • Generative AI skills for data tasks, including prompt writing for analysis support and automation ideas
  • Data governance, confidentiality, and secure handling aligned to GDPR and workplace controls
  • Digital sustainability awareness, including reducing wasteful storage and avoiding redundant data processes

Assessment & EPA

Assessment is built around real work. Throughout the apprenticeship, the apprentice gathers evidence of what they’ve delivered in the workplace, such as cleaned datasets, dashboards, reporting outputs, and documented processes.

Before End Point Assessment, the apprentice goes through Gateway. This confirms off the job training requirements have been met, English and maths requirements are in place where applicable, and the apprentice is working consistently at the expected standard.

The EPA typically includes a practical assessment where the apprentice completes set data tasks under observation and answers questions about their decisions, plus a professional discussion based on a portfolio of workplace evidence. This confirms the apprentice can work securely, explain their approach, and deliver reliable outcomes

Career Progression

Completing the Level 3 Data Technician apprenticeship opens the door to a wide range of data and reporting roles across every sector, including retail, finance, healthcare, local government, and tech. Common next roles include Data Technician, Junior Data Analyst, Reporting Analyst, Data Support Analyst, and Junior Information Analyst.

Many apprentices progress to a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship, where they move deeper into analysis, insight, and decision support. Others step into pathways such as Business Analysis, Data Engineering, or data governance and compliance, depending on whether they prefer storytelling with data, building systems, or protecting information.

Because data skills are needed everywhere, this programme doesn’t lock you into one industry. It gives you a transferable foundation and a strong platform for long term growth in the digital economy.
