Overview
The AI leadership – AI strategy and opportunity apprenticeship unit is a new Level 5 programme for employed adults aged 19 and over who are working in leadership roles and need to build confidence in AI leadership literacy, organisational opportunity assessment and strategic direction.
This unit is particularly relevant for organisations that are still at an early or exploratory stage of AI adoption. It helps leaders understand what AI can and cannot do, identify viable opportunities, assess readiness and risk, and shape a practical AI strategy that aligns with organisational goals, values and risk appetite.
This is not a coding or engineering programme. It is designed for leaders who need to make better decisions about where AI can add value, how to prioritise investment, and how to build support for responsible adoption across the organisation.
What You'll Learn
You’ll build the knowledge and judgement needed to lead AI strategy well, with a focus on opportunity identification, viability, risk and stakeholder alignment. This unit covers:
- AI leadership literacy: understanding core AI and automation concepts, their limitations, and the effect adoption may have on workplace culture and wellbeing.
- AI opportunities and business value: identifying organisational improvements and innovation opportunities using qualitative and quantitative evidence.
- Strategy and direction: defining and communicating an AI strategy aligned to organisational goals, values and risk appetite.
- Viability and readiness: assessing feasibility through use cases and pilots, including time, cost, data quality, process maturity and user testing.
- Risk and responsible adoption: evaluating unintended consequences, workforce implications, data and information security, and broader organisational impact.
- Stakeholder engagement: building support for AI strategy and adoption, including with non-technical audiences.
- Horizon scanning: keeping up with emerging AI technologies and trends to inform future strategy and implementation decisions.
Assessment & EPA
Because this is an apprenticeship unit, it does not use the traditional mandatory EPA model used on many full apprenticeships.
The minimum assessment requirement is a skills test delivered by Solveway to confirm that the learner has built the knowledge and skills set out in the unit. The employer then validates the result to confirm the learner has been successful.
Career Progression
This unit is best positioned as leadership capability development rather than a promise of one fixed next job title. It strengthens the skills needed to lead AI opportunity assessment, strategy and responsible adoption across a wide range of organisations.
Typical progression or application areas could include:
- AI strategy lead
- AI opportunity or innovation lead
- Digital transformation manager
- Operations leader with AI or automation responsibility
- Change or programme lead for AI-enabled improvement
- Senior leadership roles with oversight of AI direction, risk and investment
